The 'Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World' (EVAW) edited by
Paul Oliver can be considered as a milestone in global house research. It has
raised the ethnology of the house and of dwelling to a new global level. What
conventionally was attributed to folklore studies too is included. In view of
this global collection of data related to traditional house cultures it is not
surprising that expressions like 'the anthropology of the house' and
'anthropology of architecture' are increasingly used. Questioning the origins of
house traditions, their relation to social structure and their often dense
symbolisms has become a new standard.
